Ethereal Natural Classic
Polished Bohemian
The Mystic
With the Ethereal Natural type, we see some of the most breathtakingly serene faces—maybe the most peaceful beauty of all the types.
Ethereal Natural Classic faces can also exude tranquil vibes. But sometimes Ethereal’s wise, knowing aura, especially combined with the seriousness of Classic and the strength of Natural, actually feels intense.
Ethereal Natural Classic Barbara Stanwyck
Like Barbara Stanwyck, many Ethereal Natural Classics project a “staring into your soul quality.”
This is why Ethereal Natural Classics can look like mystics and visionaries—and so can have a more intimidating vibe than we might initially think for a type that blends such calm essences.

Ethereal Natural Classic Fashion
Ethereal Naturals are breathtaking in boho fashion. So if you’re an ENC with a ton of Ethereal and Natural, one of the easiest ways to wear your essences is to create an overall boho look, while adding in smaller elements of Classic.
I love this dress for modern boho style—the fit is roomy and Natural, while the fabric flatters Ethereal by being gently draped and having a light-as-air, semi-sheer quality. The one thing I’d change is the sharp V-neck, which brings in some Dramatic. But a more blunt-V, curving, or straight-across neckline would work well (see an example below).
What’s Classic here? The model wears a precisely-applied, medium red lip—not a staple of the carefree boho aesthetic, but definitely a staple of the polished Classic aesthetic.
If you’re primarily Ethereal Natural with just a little Classic, that red lip might be all you need to take your overall look from boho to polished boho.
Another electric orange dress, this one with a more relaxed neckline that better flatters Natural.
Vibrant oranges can evoke Natural and Ethereal, because they evoke the sun and sunsets. (Obviously the sun feels Natural because it is, after all, a part of nature. But it also feels supernatural and Ethereal with its grandeur, position above us in the heavens, and light-emanating quality.)
The dress’s overall roominess, especially above the waist, flatters Natural, while the high-low skirt and very lightweight appearing fabric communicate Ethereal. Again, you could add Classic with polished makeup, accessories, or footwear.
What if you have more Natural and Classic than Ethereal?
If you’re primarily Natural Classic, you have the magical ability to be breathtaking in basics, from simple T-shirts, cardigans, and sweaters to relaxed fit jeans. As a bonus, these pieces tend to be super easy to find in stores.
A Natural Classic look that overall appears polished and Classic with the timeless jacket and Tee, gentle vertical stripes, and neutral color scheme. Natural comes from the width of the sweater and somewhat faded, casual quality of the pants, plut the wide, extra-long straps on the bag.
To easily add Ethereal, you could add a long chain necklace or layered necklaces.
What if you have a lot of Ethereal, Natural, and Classic?
If you have high amounts of all three essences, you get to have a lot of fun.
Here a shirt with Classic blue and white pinstripes is worn in an extremely Natural way—off the shoulder and oversized. It also looks like the stylishly rumpled sleeve-detail further enhances the grungy Natural feel.
The pants appear to be highly Ethereal, in a pale color and a very gentle draped material. Classic heels help anchor the look.
As seen above with the undone buttown-down, a fun way to do Natural Classic style is wearing Classic pieces in casual ways.
In this version, a Classic blazer contracts some Natural grunge by being haphazardly belted. When creating a Natural look, the impression tends to be cooler when it doesn’t look overly curated or like you tried to put everything perfectly in place.
This belt actually does bring in a little Gamine with the playful print, but minus the print, simple, minimalist black belts work for Classic.
And the blazer appears to be worn over a semi-sheer pale skirt that adds Ethereal.
(The bag silhouette is very geometric and Dramatic; to make it Natural, look for a version with more blunt edges and a less structured feel.
Ethereal Natural Classic Makeup
Ethereal Natural Classic Naomie Harris is so mesmerizing here:
At first glance, this doesn’t look like a highly Ethereal makeup, especially not with the darkly tightlined eyes. But Naomie is actually rocking several key Ethereal beauty elements:
Pale shimmery eyeshadow all over her lids and extending almost up to her brows
Subtle lip gloss
Overall glowy skin finish with highlight on her cheeks, chin, and under her brows
Brows with a very gentle, curving arch that appear subtly elongated with brow pencil
This is actually a fantastic highly Ethereal makeup look. The blush and eye emphasis add some Classic polish and conventionality, while the eyeshadow at the outer corners has an earthiness that works for Natural.
Blue is the ultimate calm color, so it’s great for the overall peaceful vibe of ENC, especially in this deep midnight shade that communicates the subtle intensity of this essence blend. The asymmetrical neckline in soft fabric particularly flatters Ethereal.
Naomie shows the beauty of matching your makeup and outfit your style essences—mesmerizing beauty that just looks so right.
Confused With Dramatic
Before I typed Saoirse Ronan, I thought she might have Dramatic, especially because to the naked eye, she can appear to have extremely striking bone structure.
But I think seeing her in a deep Dramatic lip color illustrates why her bone structure is actually Natural.
The eye makeup is awesome on her, with Ethereal shimmer at the inner corners and Natural earth tones toward the outer corners. The soft brows and blush all work. But the intense lip doesn’t connect to anything about her beauty. That might partly be because it’s wrong for her color season, but it’s also because the color has an imposing, Dramatic feel that’s not present in her features.
Like Dramatics, Naturals also often have very strong, chiseled bone structure, and based on virtually draping Saoirse, that’s what we see in her face—Natural strength rather than Dramatic imposition.
Sometimes you can also get a clue to Dramatic vs. Natural from a person’s smile—a smile on a highly Natural face tends to look, well, much more natural and authentic for that face. Whereas a smile on a highly Dramatic face, while beautiful, often appears extremely wide on the face’s narrow bone structure (see Julia Roberts, as well as many fashion models, for examples of this).
But for the ENC type, Ethereal complicates this, since Ethereal’s otherworldly, contemplative aura isn’t optimally harmonious with a smiling expression.
Ethereal Natural Classic Kelly Hu
Kelly Hu looks gorgeous, friendly, and confident with a smile, and it shows off her strong, blunt-edged Natural bone structure. A straighter expression brings out a different side to her beauty—you can really see her wise, all-knowing Ethereal aura.
Because humans are so inherently wired to be attracted to smiling faces, everyone looks beautiful with a smile, regardless of whether it harmonizes with your facial geometry. But it can be helpful to be aware that a smile does change the shapes of your features and the vibe of the face.
Ethereal vs. Ingenue: Waves vs. Curls
Ethereal Natural Classics can resemble Ingenue blends, especially because Ingenues share aspects of ENC’s peaceful vibe.
One way to help distinguish Ethereal from Ingenue is to ask whether the person is flattered by narrow waves (Ethereal) or tight curls (Ingenue).
Vintage Amy Adams?
I remember seeing a photo of Old Hollywood actress Grace Kelly a while ago and being struck by how much she resembled modern star Amy Adams. I googled and found people who agreed with me—and also people who vehemently argued they looked nothing alike.
This is part of why I’m hesitant to recommend using your celebrity lookalikes to learn your style essences: there’s never total agreement on who truly resembles who.
In fact, right now as I’m looking at photos of Grace Kelly and Amy Adams, I don’t even know if I agree with myself on my former contention that they looked so much alike.
Grace Kelly maybe looks more like my fuzzy mental image representation of Amy Adams than she looks like an actual photo of Amy.
There’s also a distinction between looking alike in a literal sense (having similar facial feature shapes and placements) and looking alike in a style type sense (having a similar overall vibe).
When I was initially struck by their likeness, maybe what I was reacting to was Grace Kelly and Amy Adams’s style type similarity—and I do think they have a similar ENC vibe.
But if “looking like” someone just means that you have a somewhat similar vibe, then I think you can argue that a lot of classical actresses look like Amy Adams.
Is ENC a More Classic or Modern Face?
Will the real Amy Adams please stand up? In all seriousness, I don’t think any of these actresses look much like Amy Adams in a literal sense. But from a style essences perspective, there is a palpable similarity in these actresses vibes and figurative qualities.
Also again, a short curly hairstyle isn’t ideal for ENC. Katharine Hepburn is stunning, but the hair is incongruous with her face.
I also think that these classical celebrities, and Amy Adams, illustrate part of what’s fascinating about ENC beauty—despite that the “polished boho" aesthetic, which really does flatter Ethereal Natural Classics, often appears very laidback and understated, that’s not necessarily the impression we get from Ethereal Natural Classic faces.
Depending on their exact proportion of essences and their facial expression and other factors, Ethereal Natural Classics can look kind of intense. They can have “staring into your soul” type beauty.
I think this reflects the knowing, wise nature of Ethereal, combined with the serious, dignified nature of Classic, combined with the strength and confidence of Natural.
The more I study Ethereal Natural Classics, the more I think that at least for some ENCs, the title of “Mystic” or “Visionary” or “Seer” really captures their facial beauty.
Not every ENC will necessarily have this vibe. Something I probably don’t emphasize enough is that depending on your essence ratio or specific facial shapes (and a number of other qualities about your face that aren’t directly related to style essences), you might not feel that the “archetypes” I’ve suggested for your style type fit you. And that’s good! Ultimately, while there are patterns in faces, and in style types, we are all unique.
If you don’t resonate with the archetypes I’ve suggested for your beauty type, you can find your own archetype that you feel better reflects your beauty, if that’s something you want.
Also critically, depending on how you’re styled, that can really change the overall vibe of your beauty. For instance, when I was thinking about ENC celebrities who maybe don’t embody the “mystic” vibe so much, I thought of Dakota Johnson, who to me tends to have more of a polished boho aesthetic than an intensely magical one. An obvious potential answer as to why is that she almost always wears full bangs, which are iconically Classic and can also appear quite down to earth.
And the awesome thing about style analysis is that when you understand the varied qualities your face projects, you can use different hairstyles, makeup, and fashion to emphasize different qualities at different times. This is why I’m so adamant that style typing doesn’t put you into a box—it actually lets you see that you have a range of possible visual and conceptual identities, and promotes the creative act of exploring different versions of the self.
