Romantic Ethereal Natural fashion
As a Romantic Ethereal Natural, your aesthetic is extremely versatile.
One easy way to achieve REN style is to curate a more overtly sexy version of Ethereal Natural boho fashion.
With this approach, you take boho’s quintessential dreamy-meets-down-to-earth vibe and add Romantic elements, like large swathes of lace or plunging necklines.
In an opaque fabric, this silhouette could appear as a dreamy and oversized, Ethereal Natural boho dress. What adds Romantic is the sheer knit and triangle bikini top—a perfect Romantic Ethereal Natural outfit for a day at the beach.
Another approach to achieving an REN look: do a more casual version of Romantic Ethereal Grecian-inspired fashion.
Courtney Love often did an extreme version of this, as discussed here—she wore lots of lacy and silky Romantic Ethereal pieces, but they were almost always accompanied by her signature Natural grunge, like her styled-to-look-unstyled hair, often adorned with dreamy-yet-casual hairpieces.
Courtney Love wore a lot of highly Romantic and Ethereal fashion but made it look much more carefree than the formality inherent to those essences. Her whimsical hair pieces and shaggy layers helped casualize her aesthetic.
By putting a Natural spin on Romantic Ethereal fashion, Courtney simultaneously flatters her essences and makes her overall aesthetic more modern and rebellious than typical Romantic Ethereal style.
When previously reflecting on Courtney’s aesthetic, what I didn’t emphasize is that a grungy, even “messy” aesthetic, is absolutely not the only way to do REN style.
It does look incredibly cool on Courtney Love, and if you’re a Romantic Ethereal Natural, it will look incredibly cool on you.
But as a Romantic Ethereal Natural, your style doesn’t have to be grunge at all.
As noted, the Romantic Ethereal Natural aesthetic can often read as beachy and down to earth:
Romantic elements: sexy high slit skirt; wrap silhouette; moderate-sized, curving, sophisticated florals
Ethereal elements: long skirt that flows gently away from the body, especially combined with the lightweight fabric and what appears to be flutter sleeves
Natural elements: overall looseness of the dress, particularly the top, and the straw bag accessory
Another beachy Romantic Ethereal Natural dress:
Again we have a wrap style and slit skirt that add Romantic, with elongation and flow that adds Ethereal. This time, the neckline and bodice are extremely sexy and Romantic, too. What introduces Natural is the overall casual feel and relaxed styling—loose, straight-ish but not super sleek hair and bare feet.
If you look very closely, you can see that the dress is also covered in tiny polka dots, which typically have an Ingenue, Gamine, or sometimes Classic feel. From far away they just blend into the skirt, so the dress works for REN, though you could also find a solid-color version.
When selecting examples of Romantic Ethereal Natural clothing, I didn’t intend to choose three wrap dresses. But the coincidence illustrates that the wrap dress can be one of the best styles to wear as a Romantic Ethereal Natural, because:
Wrap styles are often associated with Romantic—fabric that appears to be wrapped around the body exudes sensual Romantic vibes, since it helps to create and emphasize curves.
Wrap styles also often include gently draped elongation, especially in the skirt, which is great for Ethereal.
And sometimes a wrap dress feels quite casual, like it was just kind of thrown around the body spontaneously—this adds Natural.
We see all three of those features in the above dress, which is highly Romantic because of the sensual vibe that’s accentuated by the shiny fabric and glam belt. But with the collar and the overall width and looseness of the top and sleeves, we get a very relaxed, Natural feel. The flowy Ethereal skirt silhouette makes this dress Modern Goddess approved.
Here’s another wardrobe staple for REN: the Romantic Ethereal lace camisole.
The camisole’s delicate sexiness—spaghetti straps transitioning into lacy neckline—reflects Romantic, while the pale color and body-skimming but not skin-tight fit feels Ethereal, especially in super soft and/or semi-sheer fabric.
This jacket likely has other essences besides Natural, but with it’s extremely undone styling, it adds Natural’s carefree vibe to the overall ensemble.
To make this outfit purely REN, you could pair it with a fully Natural oversized distressed denim jacket, or with Natural relaxed-fit jeans.
And returning to the beach for a final REN look:
A casual meets sexy meets angelic dress.
Romantic Ethereal Natural makeup
Romantic Ethereal Naturals can be breathtaking in minimal makeup.
Ethereal and Natural are both their best in a very light makeup application. For Natural, this means incorporating (not shockingly) natural-looking makeup—colors that are close to the ones already found in your skin and your lips, for instance, with just a bit more pigment than your natural lips and cheeks. Bronzer is particularly great when applied to the cheeks for a sun-kissed glow and can even be used as eyeshadow.
Ethereals are also flattered by extremely light makeup, especially by gentle shimmer. It’s hard to use too much highlight on a highly Ethereal face. Pale shimmery eyelids, very light lip colors, only the gentlest blush (if any at all)—what could look “washed-out” on a different style essence looks mesmerizing on Ethereals.
For both Ethereal and Natural makeup, less is often more —when the makeup is minimal, the stunning beauty of the features comes through.
As model Caridee English illustrates, Romantic Ethereal Naturals often have strong bone structure, and so can be assumed to have Dramatic.
One test of whether an REN is actually Dramatic is whether they’re highly flattered by intense Dramatic makeup, like very dark lip colors and angular liquid liner.
For Caridee, the answer is no—softness and restraint, rather than boldness, brings her to life.
This is true for many other RENs, including Natascha McElhone:
For RENs with a lot of Romantic, you can handle heavier makeup elements, like smokey eyes and generous blush. But your best makeup will still be blended and feel rather soft, as opposed to harsh or graphic.
Romantic makeup presents a paradox: Romantics can take a lot of makeup, but their best makeup is still “soft” in that it’s blended vs. unblended, shiny vs. matte, and curving vs. angular.
So you can think of Romantic makeup as “heavy yet light” or “intense yet gentle.”
If you’re an REN with a lot of Romantic, “glamorous boho” can be a great way to conceptualize both your best makeup and fashion.
Romantic Ethereal Natural faces
Confused for Ingenue
Romantic and Ethereal combined together can mimic the look of Ingenue. The rounded shapes of Romantic combine with the gentle, angelic beauty of Ethereal to resemble the rounded, gentle feel of Ingenue.
This is true for any essence blend that has both Romantic and Ethereal (Romantic Ethereal Dramatic, Romantic Ethereal Gamine, etc.).
One of the best ways to disentangle your real essences from your imposter essences is to consider your most flattering hair. While Romantic Ethereal blends are often best in long (e.g., at least several inches past the shoulders) waves, Ingenues are best in very tight, corkscrew curls that can be shorter (e.g., shoulder-length) than flattering Romantic Ethereal hair.
Confused for Dramatic
As mentioned, Romantic Ethereal Naturals are also easily mistaken for having Dramatic, because they often have strong bone structure.
Based on the celebrities I’ve analyzed so far, Romantic Ethereal Naturals also seem tall on average, another trait often associated with Dramatics (even though people of any height can have any combination of style essences!)
RENs Courtney Love, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Liv Tyler are all 5’7’’ and above, with strong bone structure that can minic the look of Dramatic.
Hair can be a good clue to Dramatic vs. Natural. Above, the full, extra-long bangs work on Courtney Love, because they feel stylishly messy, fitting her carefree Natural essence.
But what Romantic Ethereal Naturals will want to avoid is bangs that feel full, long, and intense.
Liv Tyler’s extra-long bangs feel sleek and intense (Dramatic) rather than carefree.
Sometimes people say that if you have a long face, you should use full bangs to make your face look shorter. In general, that notion is misguided. Romantic Ethereal Natural Liv Tyler is much more harmonious without obvious bangs:
Naturals can do an extremely deep side part, similar to Liv’s here, because it emphasizes the wide shapes that often characterize Natural faces. Romantics and Ethereals are also flattered by side parts but will typically want to do something a bit less extreme than this. Having all three essences makes Liv’s deep part work.
With minimal makeup and carefree hair, plus the ocean backdrop, plus a casual wrap-style-something-or-other (maybe a “casual robe,” which echoes the down-to-earth-royalty vibes of REN), Liv Tyler really embodies the REN earth goddess vibe.
And because this vibe is so different than an imposing Dramatic one, Dramatic fashion on Romantic Ethereal Naturals can feel jarring:
Severe, sleek Dramatic hair and dresses make the Romantic Ethereal Natural look constrained. Incidentally, this dress is pretty much the opposite of what people wear to the beach—it contradicts the carefree, bohemian REN aesthetic.
Romantic Ethereal Natural aura
Like the Ethereal Natural type, Romantic Ethereal Naturals project “good vibes,” simultaneously embodying a connection to nature (Natural) and transcendence to a higher purpose (Ethereal).
What RENs add is overt Romantic sensuality, passion, and emotional intensity. But even with this passionate addition, there still tends to be a sensual tranquility to the REN aesthetic.
