Natural Classic Gamine
Modern Timeless Beauty
Natural Classic Gamine Emily Rios
Natural Classic Gamines have magnetic beauty.
Natural’s friendliness + Classic’s facial symmetry + Gamine’s flirty playfulness = beauty that’s both aesthetically pleasing and has a crucial additional quality:
Natural Classic Gamines tend to look approachable. Their symmetrical, confident, lively faces have strong aesthetic appeal, but their beauty is also highly personable and welcoming.
Emily Rios illustrates this above with kind eyes and a large smile—a smile that is so harmonious with her facial geometry.
Many of the style types don’t look their most harmonious smiling. But a happy, friendly expression perfectly mimics the warmth and energy of Natural Gamine blends:
Ellie Kemper has such an infectious, captivating smile—thanks in large part to her beautiful wide bone structure, which matches a smile’s inherently wide shape.
I also love her styling here. The shoulder-length hair with simple curtain bangs flatters Classic, while the firey red captures Gamine’s boldness, as does her intense tightlining.
Natural Classic Gamine Makeup
As Ellie Kemper shows above, NCGs can look harmonious in a high amount of makeup, especially if they have more Gamine and Classic than Natural.
Gamine’s animated aura is flattered by dark eyeliner to emphasize the sharpness of the eyes, while Classic is flattered by conventional yet polished makeup:
Gamines also get pop-of-color lips:
If you’re a Natural Classic Gamine with primarily Natural, you’ll likely want (not shockingly) a more natural makeup look, like doing light mascara and skipping tightlinig, and wearing a lip color just slightly more pigmented that your natural lips.
But even if you have a lot of Natural, you might still be able to pull of darkly tightlined eyes or a vibrant lip (just maybe not both at once).
Wearing understated makeup can also enhance Natural Classic Gamine’s magnetic beauty, because minimal makeup increases the impression that NCGs are approachable and down-to-earth.

Natural Classic Gamine Fashion
If you’re a Natural Classic Gamine, your biggest fashion problem might be having too many options.
As an NCG, you’re gorgeous in the casual athleisure styles that have become synonymous with mainstream fashion: jeans, Tees, sweatshirts, oversized sweaters, pullovers, and sneakers.
And as a Classic, you get the formal basics that are perfect for professional contexts: simple blazers, blouses, dress pants, pencil skirts, and understated flats.
So unless your job or social life has you regularly donning ball gowns, you’ll probably find that NCG fashion is highly suitable for most occasions.
Popular Fashion
Another awesome thing about NCG style: it’s easy to find in stores. And likely in your own closet.
Denim jackets, playful moto jackets, utility jackets, knit cardigans, Classic trenches—as an NCG, you get the casual and polished basics that never go out of style.
And the beauty of NCG fashion is that if you want to be more adventurous and wear things that feel outside the mainstream, you can totally do that, too:
As an NCG, you don’t just get the endlessly versatile basics of the Natural and Classic essences. You also get the playful and inventive options available to Gamine.
This also helps when you want a dressier look. Pair a beret with an oversized plaid jacket or flannel, plus a simple high-neck sweater dress, and you’re ready for a night out.
Tip: stark, straight black dresses can sometimes have Dramatic. As an NCG, ensure your dress has either Natural roominess, Gamine details like a mock-neck and short sleeves, or is especially typical (Classic) in all respects. More on the best black dresses for all the essences here.
If you’d rather stay in, try:
Cozy Natural sweater, Gamine skinny jeans, and Natural Gamine boots. The mug may say “Hot mess,” but this look also feels polished and understated enough for Classic.
Personally, I don’t find skinny jeans comfortable enough for lounging around in. But fortunately as an NCG, you’re great in relaxed-fit Natural denim styles too.
NCG fashion reminds us of the beauty of simplicity:
Classic tee, Natural denim jacket, and narrow cropped Gamine pants. Gorgeous simplicity.
NCG beauty also reminds us how breathtaking—and inventive—simplicity can be:
Many of us can relate to sometimes feeling stuck in a “nothing to wear” rut. But by combining the most standard basics, like a denim jacket and jeans, you can create an entirely new vibe— and in this case, an ultra-cool “Canadian tuxedo” look.
With the NCG style type, you can challenge yourself to mix basics to make something fascinating from ordinary pieces.
Functional Wardrobe
NCG pieces are stylish and practical. They’re the wearable clothes that allow us to explore, create, and engage with a variety of activities where we need to be able to move easily.
Though again, for me that wouldn’t be by wearing Gamine skinny jeans! But the Gamine Classic Breton stripes with loose Natural fit looks super comfy and polished.
Confused with Romantic
Heavy makeup, especially dark colors encircling the eyes, is often associated with Romantic.
But Gamines also are also amazing in dark tightlining. Plus, heavy eyeliner actually tends to be better for Gamine than Romantic, especially in matte applications:
The more I observe the different beauty types, the more I’m struck by the similarities between Romantic and Gamine.
Of all the essences, these two might get the most stereotypically sexy fashion—Romantics get endless styles designed to accentuate curves, like ruching, wrap dresses, and plunging necklines, while Gamines get revealing cropped and mini silhouettes.
But it’s not just the fashion—it’s also the vibes.
Romantics tend to appear, well, romantic, and passionately sensual. Gamines tends to appear playful and flirty.
And since Gamine has a bold vibe, Gamine can often look intensely, passionately flirty, which mimics the vibe of Romantic’s intense, sensual feel.
The Romantic and Gamine essences could almost conceptually represent two different stages of love—Gamine the initial courtship stage where things are exciting, invigorating, and light-hearted; Romantic the more serious, intense, later stages.
Approachable Beauty
Another consequence of Gamine generally appearing more playful, and Romantic more serious, is that Gamines often look more approachable.
And one of the most underrated factors that influences attractiveness is how approachable a person appears.
You could have the most allegeldy scientifically beautiful face in the world, but if people fear that they might be rejected or met with coldness if they engage with you, they’re probably likely to stay away.
So intimidating-looking faces aren’t the most “attractive” faces in the literal sense of the term—they aren’t the faces that are best at drawing people to them.
What faces do have this magnetic, draw-people-to-them quality? Friendly Natural and fun-loving Gamine. Add in the familiar, timeless beauty of Classic, and you get the attractive approachability of Natural Classic Gamines.
Color Season Connection?
Marveling at how much I liked Ellie Kemper’s red hair made me think about the connection between color season and style essences.
This photo is good enough to feature a second time.
Critically, any style type can have any color season. And any style type/color season combination can be beautifully harmonious.
But certain style essences do seem to have more in common with certain color palettes.
For instance, Natural and Gamine both tend to feel figuratively “warm,” but in different ways: Natural has a friendly, inviting warmth, whereas Gamine has an electric, exuberant warmth.
And this difference in intensity corresponds to the Autumn and Spring seasons: Autumn colors are warm, blended, and understated (similar to Natural’s laidback aesthetic), whereas Spring colors are warm, energetic, and vivacious (similar to Gamine’s bold aesthetic).
So again—any combination of style essences can have any color season. You could absolutely be gorgeous as a Natural Classic Gamine True Winter, for instance.
But it is interesting to think about how when a person with a warm color season has Natural and/or Gamine, then their season’s warm colors seem especially harmonious with the warm, welcoming vibes of their style type.
I think even cooler color seasons can use this knowledge to their advantage. For example, if you’re a True Winter (a purely cool season), you still have colors in your palette that suggest warmth and heat, like True Winter reds. Your season’s reds are cool-toned, but the human brain so much associates the color red (and orange, and yellow) with warmth, that even wearing your True Winter reds can still give you a “warmer” impression, if that’s what you want.
It’s also worth noting that while Classic doesn’t seem to have quite as obvious of a color season association as Natural and Gamine, the understated elegance of Classic probably fits best with the calm, cool-toned Summer season, and possibly with the serious, dignified Winter season.
So if you’re a cool-toned NCG, you might be able to use color to highly emphasize your Classic essence, and emphasize your Natural and Gamine in other ways.
The Most Common Beauty Type?
Natural Classic Gamine might be one of the more common style types—maybe even the most common type.
Is that a bad thing? Absolutely no! When it comes to beauty, there are pros and cons to having most facial features, and there’s a ton of pros to having a well-represented beauty type.
A big one, from a practical perspective, is that per a phenomenon called the Mere Exposure Effect, people may often like and trust people who look familiar.
Importantly, it’s not necessarily a good thing that humans are biased toward familiarity. But, for better or worse, this effect can sometimes influence people’s thoughts and behaviors.
And if you’re a Natural Classic Gamine, you can benefit from this phenomenon, because from a style essences perspective, you have a familiar (and thus a highly appealing) face.
Importantly, the Mere Exposure Effect likely isn’t true for everyone. Also importantly, there can be downsides to having a more common style type. One big one: in the modern world, the faces most often represented in social media are often attention-getting and extreme—in a word, Dramatic.
But as noted above, intimidating faces can sometimes push people away, rather than drawing them in—ultimately, there are pros and cons to having all the different beauty types.
Modern or Timeless?
Faces with a lot of Natural and Gamine can feel distinctly modern, especially because they fit in so well with modernity’s casual fashion aesthetic.
So NCG faces do tend to feel modern—yet their Classic creates the impression that they could fit in across different time periods, since older time periods (like Old Hollywood) tended to heavily represent balanced, Classic faces. Plus, symmetry and balanced proportions tend to be widely appealing beauty traits across any age.
So are Natural Classic Gamines timeless or modern? They get the benefit of being both.
Modern Timeless Beauty
Of all the types, Naturals most visually embody friendliness and a willingness to engage with others.
And this friendly vibe is enhanced by Gamine’s lively, fun, bold, flirty beauty.
Combine their magnetically friendly and flirty vibes with the symmetry and balance of Classic, and you have a beauty type that humans might be wired to love.
