Romantic Natural Gamine fashion
Romantic Natural Gamine fashion fuses opposites: elaborate, glamorous Romantic with casual Natural and Gamine.
Many people, myself included, love seeing this juxtaposition of casual-meets-glam.
We know that this aesthetic is popular, because pairing jeans with a dressy top is such a ubiquitous outfit formula:
Relaxed-fit, frayed-hem Natural jeans balance a shiny, corset-esque top that has a lot of Romantic and some Gamine. Casual chunky sneakers complete the look, but you could swap in strappy, peep-toe Romantic heels for a dressier feel.
Essence blends that have both Romantic and Natural can be some of the funnest to style, because you get to create harmony by pairing pieces that look like they shouldn’t go together.
Frayed Jeans + Dressy Top is an outfit formula we see over and over again—and it has so many diverse variations, it doesn’t feel formulaic.
Another version of the formula:
Now we have jeans in a fitted Gamine silhouette with Natural distressing, plus a casual Natural belt. The top has a lot of Romantic curving sexiness.
The Jeans + Dressy Top formula really does have endless variations. In addition to your many relaxed fit Natural jean options and fitted Gamine jean options, you can also explore other types of denim like capris, shorts, mini-skirts, midi skirts, and more. Most styles of denim tend to be highly Natural, Gamine, or both.
And of course, there’s infinite dressy tops with a lot of Romantic, many of which have Natural and/or Gamine, too:
This plunging Romantic wrap takes on some Gamine with the cropped silhouette and playful color-blocking. The casual floral print adds Natural, as do the roomy sleeves that feel long for a short-sleeve length.
A more dressed up RNG look:
Rompers often have Gamine’s quintessential fun and flirty feel. A velvety fabric and lace trim add Romantic, while the overall wide, roomy silhouette introduces Natural, especially in the earth-tone hue. This romper could appear especially dressy with heels or be dressed down with sandals or sneakers.
I also love the casual glamour of the half-up, half-down, mostly straight hair and the oversize hoops—amazing for RNG.
As a Romantic Natural Gamine, you also have endless dress options that combine sexy and laidback qualities:
This dress has many Romantic elements—wrap-style, revealing slit, waist emphasis—but also a lot of Natural with the loose, T-shirt style sleeves and casual-appearing fabric in what reads as an earth tone. The playful hat adds Gamine.
I don’t love that the dress and hat seem to be drawn from different color palettes, but this dress would also be awesome paired with a wide-brimmed Natural straw hat. You could then bring in Gamine with different accessories, hairstyles, or makeup.
Selena Gomez’s makeup tricks
Romantic Natural Gamines can gather a ton of inspiration from Selena Gomez’s signature makeup. Her makeup is often highly flattering for her style type, which consists of a ton of Romantic, a good bit of Gamine, and a smaller amount of Natural. Specifically:
Selena typically uses winged liner (or eyeshadow that creates a winged effect) to extend her eyes in horizontal space. Romantic and Gamine are highly flattered by winged liner, so the style is gorgeous on her. I also think it works for her Natural, because the Natural essence is characterized by horizontally wide shapes. So visually extending Selena’s eyes with wings harmonizes to some degree with all her essences.
Selena typically tightlines her eyes, which is great for injecting Romantic glamour and Gamine flirtiness.
Sometimes she sports smokey shadow, which works well for Romantic.
She also often includes long lashes that amp up the glam, flirty impression.
Sometimes she does a vibrant matte lip that works for Gamine, or adds gloss to bring in Romantic.
Typically she wears a more neutral lip, which emphasizes her eyes and also helps her overall look not become too overpowering. Since her Natural essence is flattered by more minimal makeup, it balances her face when she keeps at least some aspect of her makeup more understated.
Nowadays, Selena’s brows usually have a Romantic arch, with a fullness that works for Natural.
Selena doesn’t always do makeup that’s ideal for her type, but her signature winged liner, tightlined eyes, and flirty lashes, combined with her other makes go-tos, are generally fantastic for Romantic Natural Gamine (especially for an RNG with primarily Romantic, secondarily Gamine, and a smaller amount of Natural).
We could speculate that this is part of Selena’s Instagram most-followed status: with her signature makeup, her face has mesmerizing harmony. She really understands what enhances her beauty.
Romantic Natural Gamine faces
Depending on hair, makeup, and overall styling, Romantic Natural Gamine faces can look extremely sexy, or extremely down-to-earth and girl-next door.
Either way, they are gorgeous. This ability to pull off both heavy glamour in makeup and a more fresh face is a hallmark of RNG, and a clue that someone has this type.
Top row: Romantic Natural Gamines Selena Gomez, Brigitte Bardot, and Mindy Kaling.
Bottom row: RNGs Britney Spears and Cameron Diaz.
Having both Romantic and Natural seems to be a relatively rarer combination compared to other blends.
For instance, it seems to be more common for Romantic to pair with Dramatic than with Natural. (The evidence for this is that I’ve found many people who have only the Romantic and Dramatic essences, but so far no one who has only Romantic and Natural).
What does this mean? Not necessarily anything, but one thing it might mean is that Romantic Natural Gamine faces can be particularly enchanting, because it is one of the rarer combinations.
RNG appeal: Girl-next-door glamour
Another reason RNG faces may be so enchanting: they make Romantic beauty more relatable.
Romantic might be most hyped-up essence in style analysis circles—the “sexiest” essence, many will say, and I’ll grant that it’s a good contender for the title of most conventionally sexy essence.
But in the real world, it may be underestimated that Romantic beauty can be intimidating. Its sexiness and glamour don’t win it the title of “most approachable style essence.”
But Natural is a strong contender for the most approachable essence, with its friendly, down-to-earth feel.
So the fascinating thing about types that combine Romantic and Natural, like RNG, is that Romantic can now take on a more approachable, relatable quality. In RNG faces, suddenly Romantic looks a lot friendlier.
This could be another factor contributing to Selena Gomez’s most-followed status—or maybe not. Ultimately factors like her personality may be more important.
Still, I think we tend to underestimate the degree to which (perceived) friendliness and approachability influence people’s assessments of what is and isn’t attractive.
A Romantic Dramatic might internally be the friendliest, sweetest person on the planet, but externally, they don’t tend to project this vibe.
And while a Romantic Natural Gamine won’t necessarily have a friendly, warm personality, they’re much more likely to visually appear like they do than many of the other Romantic blends.
So having both Romantic and Natural in your essence blend can be a powerful thing, because you get the benefit of the high conventional sex appeal of Romantic with the approachability of Natural.
I think Gamine can increase Romantic’s approachability, too (by making Romantic seem less intense and more flirty and fun), though probably not as much as Natural.
RNG appeal: Rare beauty
As mentioned several times now, Romantic Natural Gamine Selena Gomez is currently the most-followed woman on Instagram.
And part of her popularity might be largely due to her non-physical qualities—her personality, her work, etc.
But of course Instagram is a visual platform, so it seems unlikely that her exorbitant follower count has nothing to do with her looks.
As noted, part of Selena’s visual appeal might be her makeup that so frequently is extremely harmonious with her face.
Also noted above, another factor might be that Romantic and Natural together create an incredibly attractive, “approachable glamour”—the intimidating aspects of Romantic beauty are minimized thanks to Naturals’ laidback, relatable appeal.
So maybe of all the types, Romantic Natural Gamines have some of the most “popular” beauty.
This leads to a third potential reason for Selena’s visual appeal: mainstream fashion consists of highly casual, heavily Natural and/or Gamine style. As an RNG, despite that Selena’s a mega-celebrity, she visually looks harmonious in the type of fashion on heavy wardrobe rotation of the average person.
Outside of the red carpet, it seems really rare to see purely Romantic style. In everyday life, Romantic fashion is usually paired with elements that add a much more laidback feel—Natural, Gamine, or both.
Maybe this is a modern American ideal: look really gorgeous and like you tried, but also somehow like you didn’t try.
As a Romantic Natural Gamine, Selena Gomez can easily embody this sentiment with her blend of glamorous and casual beauty.
Selena’s appeal: Style type and color season
A final thought on Selena Gomez’s widespread appeal: her Romantic Natural Gamine style type has a very obvious relationship to her color season, Dark Winter (sometimes also called Deep Winter).
Dark Winter is Winter with the influence of Autumn. Winter’s vibe is intense, serious, and bold, fitting with qualities of both Romantics and Gamines.
Many colors that are stunning for Dark Winter, like deep reds and purples, are also iconically Romantic. Bold Dark Winter colors also harmonize well with high-energy Gamine.
So Dark Winter has a strong relationship to Selena’s dominant Romantic, and also easily flatters her Gamine essence.
And Dark Winter’s Autumn influence ties in her Natural color season: compared to other Winters, Dark Winter’s colors are slightly warmer and more faded, which echoes the laidback, nature-influenced Natural vibe.
Important: any color season can work amazingly with any style type. It’s just possible that because Selena’s style type has an obvious relationship to her color palette, this helps her beauty to feel more understandable and appealing to an (extremely) wide audience.
Beauty is beauty is beauty
Ultimately, Selena Gomez and other Romantic Natural Gamines are beautiful because they are beautiful. A verbal analysis can’t fully explain why someone is beautiful, because of course beauty is something we experience with our senses. You can’t fully capture this experience with words alone.
So I always feel that my verbal descriptions of the types fail them, because to really understand and appreciate and be in awe of beauty, you of course have to look rather than read.
