Romantic Dramatic Gamine makeup

Of all the style types, RDGs are the ultimate makeup wearers.

Romantic gets glamorous makeup, Dramatic gets striking, avant-garde makeup, and Gamine gets playful, creative makeup. If you’re an RDG, you can rock all these diverse styles or combine them for an inventive yet harmonious look.

Priyanka Chopra pairs bold, angular brows with avant-garde winged liner and ultra- glam curls, top, and earrings—and it all basically works. (If we want to be really perfectionistic, the earrings add unnecessary Ethereal, and the lip color clashes with her season. Still, she’s stunning).

Any of those elements—her makeup, hair, dress—could easily overwhelm someone with a different style type. Thanks to her RDG beauty, Priyanka pulls it all off effortlessly.

The miraculous thing about having a Romantic Dramatic Gamine face: you can kind of keep piling makeup on and on and on and have it look harmonious. The heaviest eyeliner, lashes, and eyeshadow tend to enhance rather than overpower Romantic Dramatic Gamine beauty.

Vanessa Hudgens is another Romantic Dramatic Gamine who routinely looks relaxed and not “trying too hard” in extreme makeup. Here she wears what might be one of the darkest, boldest eye makeup looks possible. And it is a bit angular, unblended, and matte for her Romantic essence (which prefers soft edges, blending, and shine or shimmery)—but it’s also hard to think of another celebrity who could better showcase makeup of this intensity.

Though many other Romantic Dramatic Gamine celebrities also look effortless in intense makeup—Emily Ratajkowski, Halle Berry, and Camila Mendez, to name just a few.

Can other types pull off this kind of makeup? It tends to be a lot trickier.

Faces with a lot of Ethereal, Ingenue, or Natural are overall flattered by much gentler, more minimal makeup. Classics can take a moderate amount of makeup, but they’re also flattered by a degree of restraint.

Pure Romantic Dramatics can handle a ton of makeup. But if that makeup gets too colorful or quirky, it can clash with the seriousness of Romantic Dramatic beauty.

Of all the style types, Romantic Dramatic Gamines get the boldest and most intense—yet simultaneously fun and whimsical—makeup options.

Romantic Dramatic Gamine fashion

What’s true of makeup is also generally true of fashion: Romantic Dramatic Gamines can wear some really out-there looks.

See RDG fashion inspiration on Pinterest, and see below for an exploration of RDG style.

RDG fashion combines glamorous Romantic Dramatic bombshell style with the quirkiness and inventiveness of Gamine.

The RDG aesthetic is extremely fun to wear, because it fully embrace the boldness of Dramatic, the elaborateness of Romantic, and the inventiveness of Gamine to result in some shockingly creative looks.

Will you be wearing these outfits to class or to the office, maybe not (though if you are, that’s awesome). But the more avant-garde side of RDG fashion can still provide inspiration for your day-to-day look.

Maybe an oversized Romantic Dramatic faux-fur jacket works better in your wardrobe in black than in an electric yellow. Or maybe you pair a patterned body-con dress with sneakers instead of heels, or with leggings and boots.

As easy as it is to make RDG look over-the-top and outrageous, you can also make it totally wearable.

Wearable Romantic Dramatic Gamine

Gamines are gorgeous in many different styles of denim, especially slim-fit and skinny jeans. Wearing Gamine denim is one great way to casualize an RDG look.

An oversize Dramatic blazer and sexy lacy Romantic top (the crop silhouette works well for Gamine, too) feel less formal when paired with denim.

This could even be an easy RDG outfit formal: fitted Gamine jeans + sexy Romantic top + oversized Dramatic jacket.

Other things being equal, black and dark neutrals tend to appear more formal than bright colors. So wearing a lot of dark neutrals can also be a way to honor both the formality and intensity of Romantic and Dramatic while wearing relatively casual clothes.

For instance, you could wear head-to-toe black by mixing pieces like jeans, leggings (generally good for Dramatic if full-length, or Gamine if cropped), and T-shirts.

See here for T-shirt styles that work every essence. That post focuses on white Tees, but the styles mentioned it depicts will also read as Romantic, Dramatic, or Gamine in a dark neutral.

And if you want to combine black and white, that can be a great way to integrate Gamine. While pure black can echo with the boldness of Gamine, a highly Gamine look will typically add another color for contrast.

Alternately, you can use highly Gamine silhouettes like crop tops and ankle boots (although we’re definitely straying from the quintessential “wearable” territory here):

“Going out” type outfits often have a lot of Dramatic, Gamine, and/or Romantic. Since Romantic Dramatic bombshell style is iconically sexy, and since Gamine is great in short and fitted silhouettes, RDG fashion can exude extreme sex appeal.

Even if you don’t want to wear super sexy RDG style, you might still be able to take inspiration from it. For instance, you could layer a cropped top over a full-length shirt or pair it with high-waist bottoms, or you could wear leggings or opague tights under a short skirt.

Romantic Dramatic Gamine faces

So Romantic Dramatic Gamine fashion and makeup tends to be exuberant and attention-grabbing—is this true of Romantic Dramatic Gamine faces, too?

In many ways, yes.

Purely Romantic Dramatic faces can look deeply passionate, like the embodiment of an overpowering, intoxicating form of infatuation or love.

Romantic Dramatic Gamine faces can also have this intensely passionate quality. But because of Gamine, RDG faces often appear friendlier and more approachable than Romantic Dramatic faces. With Gamine, the RD’s powerful emotion becomes less serious and more playfully flirty.

We can see this in fashion, too—even though RDG fashion can be extremely bold and inventive, Gamine can help it read as pretty casual, with its emphasis on clothing items like jeans and Tees.

RDG faces can be like this, too—they aren’t relegated to expressing only one vibe. Sometimes they might exude a passion, intensity, and boldness very much akin to the Romantic Dramatic type. At other times, they might seem chiller and more playful.

Romantic Dramatic Gamine Eva Mendez is a fantastic example of how Romantic Dramatic’s extremely intense beauty can feel more light-hearted and playful with the addition of Gamine—while still exuding tons of sex appeal, of course. There’s so much expression just in her arched brows.

The Gamine ‘smirk?’

Do Gamines look smug or smirking? In my view, no! But Gamines are sometimes described as being harmonious with a closed-mouth, smirk-like smile.

“Smirk” just has such a negative connotation—is there a better word?—and implies some degree of malice, which isn’t the vibe of Gamine or of RDG. Romantic Dramatic Gamine’s smile often has a playfulness, a flirtatiousness, a light-heartedness.

Romantic Dramatic Gamine facial features

RD and RDG have different vibes but tend to have very similar literal features.

Romantic Dramatic Gamines often have large, sultry eyes, arched, expressive brows, full lips and cheeks, and delicate yet sharp and angular bone structure, including small or short chins.

Of course, not all RDGs will have these physical features, and may even have opposite features—for instance, if a Romantic Dramatic Gamine has Dramatic eyes, their eyes may appear quite angular and horizontally elongated, rather than the rounder shape commonly seen on Romantic. Interestingly, Gamine eyes to sometimes appear quite wide and rounded, and other times appear smaller and narrower.

One reason I don’t tend to spend too much time describing the literal features of the types is that there really is so much range within each style type, it’s typically very hard to say that any type always has a specific facial feature, like large eyes or an angular nose or anything else.

What tends to be more consistent within a given style type is that type’s vibe—although of course, two people with the same type can have a very different vibe.

And even the exact same person can have a very different vibe compared to themself, depending on their makeup, hair, outfit, facial expression, etc.

Romantic Dramatic Gamine vs. Romantic Dramatic

With their similar facial features and vibes, Romantic Dramatic Gamine and Romantic Dramatic can be two of the hardest types to distinguish.

To make things even more complicated, in Kibbe’s system, many Romantic Dramatic Gamines will fall into the category of Theatrical Romantic, essentially combining Romantic and Dramatic.

So people more familiar with Kibbe’s system may have a habit of visually grouping together all faces that have evidently strong amounts of both Romantic and Dramatic, further complicating the matter of distinguishing RDG and RD.

So how do you differentiate them?

One of the best question to ask is whether the person looks their best with A. some amount of evident playfulness in their fashion, hair, and makeup, or B. a very serious, overall mature look.

RDGs can look a bit stiff in the most standard, formal versions of glamorous bombshell fashion, like shiny tight cocktail dresses and body-con midis—unless these outfits have some degree of whimsy and fun.

RDG Salma Hayek is gorgeous in this highly Romantic Dramatic dress, hair, and makeup. The one thing that would make it even better: injecting some Gamine playfulness. She does look great here, but it’s a bit of a visual straitjacket that confines her Gamine esence, which wants a little more whimsy and fun.

Romantic Dramatic Gamine actresses

Why are so many actresses RDGs? Is it at least partly because their style essence are so inherently expressive?

Maybe. Maybe not. But it probably doesn’t hurt an actress to have such a naturally expressive face.

The more obvious explanation for their prevalence as actresses: Romantic Dramatic Gamines are a quintessentially sexy type, with the bombshell Romantic Dramatic vibe combined with the flirtatiousness of Gamine. It makes sense they star in movies, which often either have some element of romance as central to the plot, even when the genre isn’t a “romance” film.

While people with any style type can play a great romantic lead, casting directors might be drawn to the natural passion of RDG faces.

Plus, by carrying intense makeup and fashion, Romantic Dramatic Gamines very much fit into the modern day valuation of bold, attention-grabbing beauty.
