Dramatic Ingenue

Image of delicate purple flowers on a dark moody backdrop. The small circular shapes of the flowers symbolize the sweet Ingenue essence, whereas the bold purple and black color scheme symbolizes the regal Dramatic essence.

Dramatic Ingenues combine what might be the two most opposite essences:

  • Long, sharp Dramatic shapes that look imposing and powerful.

  • Short, round Ingenue shapes that look soft and gentle.

The result is a gorgeous contrast.

Are Dramatic Ingenues rare? Maybe. So far I’ve only identified 6 Dramatic Ingenue celebrities:

  • Adrianne Curry

  • Blythe Danner

  • Bella Heathcote

  • Jane Krakowski

  • Kaitlin Olson

  • Natalia Dyer

The Dramatic Ingenues I’ve found also generally have a higher percentage of Ingenue than Dramatic, appearing more sweet than edgy.

But with their faces, we still see the contrast of rounded, short Ingenue features with angular, imposing Dramatic bone structure. Such an interesting and beautiful type.

Dramatic Ingenue or Ethereal Dramatic Ingenue?

Most of the above Dramatic Ingenues could pass for having Ethereal.

Why? DI and EDI have similar literal shapes—Dramatic elongation + Ingenue curves can mimic the look of elongated, curving Ethereal shapes

Plus, DI and EDI have similar vibes.

Dramatic looks otherworldly.

Ingenue looks gentle.

And Ethereal looks both otherworldly and gentle.

So how can you tell if otherworldly gentleness is Ethereal, or from a combination of Dramatic and Ingenue?

A few key answers:

  1. Virtual draping—comparing faces to different styles of clothing until your body feels which is most harmonious, analogous to how we use our senses to perceive harmony or disharmonious in music.

  2. Pattern recognition—over time, I’ve developed awareness of how features characteristic of the 7 essences, as well as of the blended types, tend to look. I combine the more sensory process of virtual draping with the more intellectual process of pattern recognition to achieve accurate typings.

  3. Celebrity comparisons—it can also help to compare a celebrity you’re trying to type to the faces of other celebrities whose types you do know, to see if there is harmony or disharmony.

I do think Dramatic Ingenues, when viewed as a group, are noticeably different from Ethereal Dramatic Ingenues. The differences can just be extremely subtle.

Reconciling Dramatic and Ingenue kind of

How I initially drafted this post:

Dramatic Ingenue—what’s the unification?

Dramatic and Natural are the strongest essences. So the Dramatic Natural can look like an elite athlete.

Romantic Dramatic (the most intense essences)—bombshell

Ethereal Dramatic (the most otherworldly essences)—otherworldly beauty

Dramatic Gamine (the most angular, edgy essences)—rockstar

Dramatic Ingenue (the most…?)—

And then I tried to figure out what both are.

First I thought that both are somewhat proper.

Dramatic is proper in that its fashion tends to read as formal and dignified. Ingenue is proper in that its fashion tends to read as neat and pleasing to the eye, without elements that the viewer might find harsh or objectionable.

But out of all 7 essences, the Classic essence probably best embodies properness.

Then I thought, maybe Dramatic and Ingenue are both highly impressive and admirable, but in different ways. Ingenue is like, “I want you to like me. I want to impress you.” And Dramatic is like, “You are impressed by me.”

Ingenue wins our admiration by appearing nice and likable; Dramatic seizes our admiration by appearing powerful.

So I don’t think Dramatic and Ingenue are completely contradictory. I do think they both have a “proper” element and an “impressive” or “admirable” element, which is why together they can have an especially royal, regal feel.

Still we have this inherent contradiction of edgy and intimidating vs. gentle and kind. So maybe rather than trying to entirely reconcile that contradiction, it’s best to define Dramatic Ingenues in part by that contradiction.

Edgy and sweet.

A lot of great fashion and art juxtaposes seemingly contradictory elements.

Contradiction vs. disharmony

If the Dramatic Ingenue vibe can be viewed as contradictory, does that make this style type unharmonious?

Definitely not.

There’s a difference between contrast and lack of harmony. For example, a song can combine opposite elements (very loud and very quiet moments, fast and slow) while still being harmonious as a whole. Personally, I love contrast in art. I like music that mixes genres and vocal styles, and I dislike the advice to maintain a consistent tone in writing—why be consistent, for instance, if the genuine feeling or idea you’re driven to communicate is complex and conflicting?

Contrast creates interest, liveliness, complexity, and consequently beauty.

Contrast can create disharmony when it feels unintentional and like a mistake, like if your cat ran across your piano and pressed random keys while you were playing Beethoven, or like if a person with the Dramatic Ingenue style type wore an outfit with a lot of Romantic and Natural.

But on a face, contrasting style essences don’t feel like a mistake. This contrast feels intentional, meaningful, and harmonious.

Below, Dramatic Ingenue Bella Heathcote’s face doesn’t appear at all disharmonious with itself. Here she’s at a premiere for the movie “Killing Them Softly,” which could actually be the Dramatic Ingenue motto. Or maybe “Healing Them Aggressively,” for a more positive spin.

Dramatic Ingenue: metal meets pop

This post speculated that if the style essences were music genres, Dramatic would be Metal, and Ingenue would be Pop.

That’s because the Dramatic essence is extremely intense (metal) and the Ingenue essence is extremely pretty and pleasing (pop).

Coincidentally, one of my favorite things in music, and possibly in existence, is metal covers of pop songs.

I love the intensity and passion of metal music, and I also love the more conventionally pleasing, catchy hooks and melodies of pop music.

So Dramatic Ingenue visually embodies the astounding beauty of metal covers of pop.
