What do Ethereal Gamines and Ethereal Gamine blends look like?
Style analysis is hard because we lack clear visual definitions of the types.
If someone asks, “What does the color blue look like?”, it’s easy to conjure a visual answer in our minds, because we all have a clear visual definition of blue.
But if someone asks, “What does an Ethereal Gamine look like?”, we may come up with a big question mark.
This post will present photos of Ethereal Gamines to show how I visually define them. I’ll also show photos of Ethereal Gamine blends (Ethereal Classic Gamine, Romantic Ethereal Gamine, etc.).
Through years of training my eye to detect small differences in faces, I’m confident in my ability to accurately type any person. I’ve spent many hours carefully comparing the faces of all the below celebrities to different styles of clothing to determine their true style types.
I chose Ethereal Gamines for this post partly randomly and partly because they’re beautiful and have such a cool vibe—to me they look like mermaids.
Celebrities I’ve typed as Ethereal Gamine:
(From left to right) Sophie Turner, Sara Paxton, Willa Holland, Grace Huang, and Lili Reinhart don’t all look literally alike, but their faces are all harmonious with one another.
Celebrities I’ve typed as Ethereal Classic Gamine:
(From l to r) Raven, Kate Upon, Björk, Michelle Williams, and Emma Stone’s faces also appear harmonious with one another.
If Ethereal Gamines look like mermaids, then we could call these Ethereal Classic Gamines “Polished mermaids.”
Classic or not?
Let’s dispute these typings by swapping some of the faces.
So let’s say we think Michelle Williams (second photo from right above) doesn’t have Classic.
We’ll test this idea by inserting Michelle’s photo into the Ethereal Gamine lineup and seeing if she looks more harmonious amidst them:
To me Michelle doesn’t look especially harmonious here between Ethereal Gamines Willa Holland and Lili Reinhart. She appeared more harmonious among the Ethereal Classic Gamines.
We can conduct a variation of this experiment—like maybe we think Grace Huang looks really symmetrical and proportional, so we think she has Classic. We can put her photo amidst the Ethereal Classic Gamines to see:
This swap to me is trickier, because Grace (second from right above) does have a lot of facial symmetry and balance. But compared to the ECGs, there may be subtle differences in Grace’s facial features and proportions (maybe a slightly longer nose and overall face?) that make her more harmonious here adjacent to Ethereal Gamines:
Do you see her as more harmonious with the top row or bottom? You can flip back and forth between the two lineups to see which arrangement seems to bring your body a greater sense of peace and calm, and which produces greater tension.
Romantic Ethereal Gamine (Glamorous mermaid)
Maybe we think some of the alleged Ethereal Gamines are mistyped. Like maybe we think some of them, with their large eyes and short noses and plump cheeks, have the Romantic essence.
Here are some celebrities I’ve typed as Romantic Ethereal Gamine:
From l to r: Rihanna, Aishwarya Rai, Emily Browning, Phoebe Tonkin, and Kristen Stewart.
Something about the above Romantic Ethereal Gamine faces to me reads as more intense than the Ethereal Gamines. Sort of like Romantic adds smoldering and glamour.
In contrast, Ethereal Gamines appear gentler, cuter:
You could argue it’s the makeup, but it doesn’t appear that the Romantic Ethereal Gamines are overall wearing visibly heavier makeup than the Ethereal Gamines. Instead, something in the Romantic facial features themselves—maybe slightly curvier eyes, lips, or cheeks—produces this glamorous, alluring effect.
Here’s what happens when you take Ethereal Gamine features and add a different kind of intensity—Dramatic, imposing intensity:
Ethereal Dramatic Gamine (Intense mermaid)
I’ve typed (l to r) Brittany Snow, Alanna Arrington, Carice van Houten, Tyra Banks and Cara Delevingne all as Ethereal Dramatic Gamine.
Dramatics and Naturals are often confused, so we can also see what happens when we swap Dramatic for Natural:
Ethereal Natural Gamine (Carefree mermaid)
From l to r: Annie Murphy, Rashida Jones, Jennifer Aniston, Miley Cyrus, Kat Graham.
Dramatic intensity really can resemble Natural strength. In this lineup we maybe see this most clearly in Miley, who could pass for having Dramatic in this photo (especially with the edgy hairstyle). If you compare her from Ethereal Natural Gamine to Ethereal Dramatic Gamine, though, you may find like I do that she harmonizes better with ENG.
And here again are the faces I’ve typed as Ethereal Gamine for comparison:
Finally, here’s the one Ethereal Gamine blend not yet discussed:
Ethereal Gamine Ingenue (Sweet mermaid)
From l to r: Sofia Richie, Hayden Panettiere, Jisoo, Carey Mulligan, and Lana Condor.
This may be the subtlest distinction yet. Ethereal and Ingenue have a lot of conceptual overlap (both can appear gentle and angelic), and Ingenue and Gamine are both shortened essences with youthful vibes.
So another reason style typing is so hard—the different essences can appear highly similar to one another. You may have to study the types for a long time to fully grasp the differences.
